Tooting Heroes Award

In early June 2022, our Directors Arfan and Adil Javid of Royal Mahal took a trip to the Houses of Parliament where they brought home an award for dedicated service to the Tooting community. The award was hosted by Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, the Labour MP for Tooting and Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health.

This is a highly commendable award for Royal Mahal to be recognised for. The ceremony paid special tributes to the team at Royal Mahal, for being key community players, creating a hub for the people of Tooting and being a shining example of a successful local business.

As Arfan and Adil sat down after collecting their award, Rosena explained: ‘I would like to thank all those who attended – I cannot overstate how proud I am of our community. Each one of you is a true Tooting Hero.’

Dr Rosena, Labour MP for Tooting

Rosena grew up in Tooting and still lives here, currently raising her children. She understands the culture, the community and the change in popularity and demand.

‘Tooting has certainly changed over the years, more and more people are moving into the area, drawn in by the huge range of vibrant shops, bars and restaurants. Despite the changes, I think Tooting has kept its uniqueness – it has always had its own identity and its soul.’ (Dr Rosena)

Alongside demands for parliament, Rosena works as an A&E doctor at St George’s Hospital, which is highly commendable. First elected as Member of Parliament for Tooting in 2016, she was then re-elected in 2017. Rosena is proudly pro-Remain and has continued to listen to Tooting residents on Brexit. Over the last three years, Rosena has stood up for our hard-working NHS staff, challenged Wandsworth Council over fly-tipping in Tooting and, as a humanitarian aid doctor, has fought for refugees fleeing persecution worldwide.

The London Borough of Tooting

Whether it’s the multitude of independent businesses, the scented market stalls or the vast array of authentic Indian curry restaurants, where Royal Mahal’s home is, Tooting, South London is one of the trendiest places to eat, drink and be seen. With lively character, revelling in multiculturalism and originality, Tooting has evolved even further over the past few years and is seen as one of the hotspots which South London has to offer.

What this award means to Royal Mahal

After launching in 2020 during the Pandemic, Royal Mahal has understood the difficulties for the local community and has taken it upon themselves to regularly support wherever possible and give back. ‘A problem shared is a problem, halved’ said Arfan Javid when they kickstarted the free school meals for parents to collect during the October half term. Consequently, month by month Royal Mahal aims to contribute and has done to the likes of St George’s Hospital and Tooting Community Kitchen.

Adil Javid, Director of Royal Mahal said:

‘It gives us great joy receiving this award and being honoured, not only by Rosena but the residents of Tooting too. The team over at Royal Mahal work tirelessly to give back to our local community. We are advocates of Tooting and we want to continue to push to support locals, bring people together and make our little town wonderful. It gives us great joy to see communities come together and we look forward to continuing to collaborate and support the inspiring people who do so much for the local area. We are extremely grateful for this award.’

Look out for our award in our restaurant!
