What does Halal mean?

So, what actually does Halal mean? Halal is an Arabic word that means lawful or permissible, more generally referring to what’s allowed under Islamic law. It is defined by the Quran. Halal food is guided by religious criteria that govern everything from how the animals destined to be eaten are fed and raised, to how they are slaughtered and prepared for consumption.

In the meat and poultry food industry, animals such as cows, veal, lamb, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, ducks, etc, are considered halal, but they must be prepared according to Islamic laws in order for their meat to be suitable for consumption. In order for products to receive this certification, they must be from an acceptable source such as a cow or chicken and slaughtered according to these laws. This is a procedure that makes them insensible to pain and distress.

Cultural significance

Offering Halal certified products allows Muslim consumers to be confident that the products they use are in alignment with their culture and beliefs.

It is important for Halal restaurants to be recognised throughout the country to respect choices and beliefs. Some Muslims may choose to not eat at a respective place if the restaurant is not certified as Halal. So we need to give them the option and we need to recognise the importance of Halal certified restaurants. Generally speaking, Muslims need to know where meat has come from and if the restaurant practises Halal preachings. It is important to tell customers what they are eating, and how food has been prepared. As well as being Halal friendly, the setting needs to be alcohol-free too to respect the religion.

Royal Mahal is certified Halal by the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) so all customers can be assured our meat is sourced from Halal butchers.
